Pretty in Pink: GATG invited to the Whitecaps Women and Girls in Sports Match

On April 12, 2025 Girls at the Games were invited to set up a booth at Terry Fox Plaza in collaboration with the Vancouver Whitecaps for their Women and Girls in Sports match.

With a pink tablecloth, pink balloons, and markers to write on pink note-cards, Girls at the Games set up an interactive experience to showcase what it means to be a woman in sports.

The notecards handed out asked girls questions related to the future of female sports; such as which female athletes have inspired them. Our reporter Chelsea Nielsen went around the plaza doing fan interviews, getting answers from girls to moms, and even the cheerleaders.

The popular answer when asked about a female athlete that inspired them was Christine Sinclaire, Canadian soccer legend. Many of the girls and women felt inspired by her trajectory and her impact in the sports world.

When asked about the Vancouver Rise FC, the first female professional soccer team, the girls were excited to cheer for a team they could look up to. A team where they could identify themselves in a player.

The GATG booth was busy with women of all ages making friendship bracelets, whether it was for themselves, their friends and family, or simply a woman that inspires them.

Making friendship bracelets has become a guaranteed crowd pleaser at GATG booths. Our team was busy tying knots, cutting strings, and helping out with the beads, always with smiles on their faces.

GATG managed to paint a tiny section of the plaza pink. This section spoke louder than words, no matter how small it was. The pink stood out from the rest of the blue and white tents from the Whitecaps.

This was simply a representation of how this team wants to show women they can break the ceiling and find seats at the table in the sports world.

We are immensely grateful to the Whitecaps for the opportunity they gave the team as they continue to pursue the goal of reaching girls and women who want to find a safe space in the sports world.

Girls at the Games aspire to show the world there are seats for women at sports events, spots in rosters for younger girls, and simply a space for pink accents to be present at games. Thank you Vancouver Whitecaps FC for celebrating women and girls in sports.
