On April 4, 2025, Canada Women’s National (CANWNT) team took on Argentina’s National Women’s team in the first of two international friendlies between the countries.

This match marked Canada’s head coach, Casey Stoney’s first match as head coach in Canada. This brought fire from team Canada which lead to a 3-0 victory.

Canada Remains Unbeaten Against Argentina

Since 2003, Canada and Argentina’s women football clubs have faced off a total of six times, excluding this match. The last time these countries faced each other was in Spain in 2022, where Canada secured a 2-0 win. Canada has done well, winning all six matches, now adding a seventh.

Jade Rose’s First International Goal

Jade Rose has made 27 CANWNT appearances, since her debut for the country in 2021 at the age of 18. She made her debut against Argentina, and in a full-circle moment, four years later, Rose scored her first goal giving Canada a 1-0 lead in this most recent matchup.

In the 24’ of the game, Rose scored for Canada getting them a 1-0 lead and commented, “I didn’t expect it. Which was, I feel like, visible on my face.” It was a great moment for Rose to get this goal as it was on her home turf.

Getting the Rebounds

Before the first half was over, Canada had a great shot on Argentina’s goalie, which she was ready for and saved. Canada was there for the rebound which again, Argentina’s goalie met with a second incredible save.

Canada was not done yet, and on their third straight shot, in the 39’, Nichelle Prince got the rebound in the net, making the score 2-0 in favour of Canada heading into halftime.

Keeping the Pressure on

Julia Grosso started the game as a substitute and entered the game in the 59’. She helped Canada to keep pressure on Argentina, scoring Canada’s third goal in the 87’.

Grosso and CANWNT not letting up on pressure against Argentina helped them not only secure the win, but secure it with a blank sheet for a final score of 3-0.

Looking Ahead

CANWNT faces Argentina again on April 8, 2025, where they will work to continue their winning ways and make their all-time record against Argentina 8-0. Rather than playing at BC Place again, the two teams will face-off in Langford at Starlight Stadium, on Vancouver Island.

There are currently no further games scheduled, but when Stoney was asked about the fans having more opportunities to come out and cheer on CANWNT, she responded, “Yes absolutely, we’re gonna be back home… there will be several,” hinting at more games in the upcoming months.
